Why go on a Yoga Retreat in Sri Lanka?
Sri Lanka might be a small island, but what it has to offer is more than you can imagine. In the central province, you can visit the Lion’s Rock, an ancient rock fortress of Sigiriya, or the famous cave temples of Dambulla, a sacred pilgrimage site with five sanctuaries and Buddhist mural paintings that cover more than 2000 square metres; you can take a stroll in the sacred city of Anuradhapura marvelling at its ancient Buddhist temples and giant dome-shaped stupas or mingle with wildlife in Yala National Park which has the highest density of leopards in the world.
Immersing yourself on a yoga holiday for a few weeks is a temporary lifestyle change that can lead to permanent transformation in your body, mind and spirit. And if you choose to go on this healing journey in a country where you are surrounded by lush greenery, rich biodiversity, ancient Buddhist temples and swaying coconut palm trees, the shift can be even greater. This is Sri Lanka, an emerging pristine, off the beaten track and affordable Asian hotspot, a feast for all the senses with its rich cultural heritage, colonial architecture, and a wide array of classic dishes such as the egg hopper or Sri Lankan kottu roti, that you won’t find anywhere else.
According to Hindu mythology, Vishwakarma, the divine architect created a kingdom called Lanka, which is one of the earliest written references to the island of Sri Lanka in the Ramayana. The island of ’serendipity’ – Sarandīb as the ancient Persians and Arabs referred to it from the Sanskrit word Siṃhaladvīpah – is a year-round destination for surfers trying to ride the best waves in a tropical climate, and for people who want to practice yoga and meditation, or experience the ancient healing practices of Ayurveda.

Yoga Retreat Schedule
The days can vary, but the day always begins with a cup of herbal tea before the early morning revitalising yoga session at 6 am. At 8.30 am guests can choose from a smorgasbord of healthy and nourishing dishes as part of an abundant breakfast with a refreshing king coconut. Between 9.30 am and 1 pm, and from 2 to 5 pm, guests have their bespoke Ayurvedic treatments and special programs they have requested. Guests also have free time during the day to explore and to experience the feeling of just ’being’ and connecting with nature and others around them. After an evening yoga class with meditation, mantra chanting and gong bath taught by either a Buddhist monk or one of the centre’s highly experienced and carefully selected yoga teachers, the day ends with a light but wholesome dinner around a communal table where guests can connect and share their experiences.

Why Sri Lanka?
Sri Lanka offers a wide range of yoga, meditation, and wellness retreats at resorts with world-class facilities where you can also do surf courses or even yoga teacher training. Many of these centres incorporate detox programs and Ayurvedic treatments into their yoga retreat experience, but there is only one retreat centre in the southern province of this special country that offers a bespoke healing and treatment plan for each guest. Sen Wellness was founded on Ayurvedic principles and takes a holistic approach to healing, with world-class osteopathic treatments, daily yoga and meditation classes, sound journeys, and various other complementary healing practices. Whether you’re a seasoned yogi or just starting your yoga journey, there’s a perfect retreat for you in Sri Lanka.

The team did a great job of educating us on the Ayurvedic practices (cooking, philosophy, nutrition, lifestyle) and the treatments were wonderful (my first Ayurvedic retreat).
What also made the stay so special is the community that the staff are fostering, so if you are travelling solo then dint worry, you’ll meet some wonderful fellow travellers. As this isn’t really a place for 1 or 2 nights, you have time you really build connections.
The sanctuary is situated far off the beaten track in a nature reserve surrounded by a lagoon and the ocean. If you want to disconnect (from the world) yet feel more connected (with like minded people) then there isn’t a better place to go!
The experience from start to finish was superb - I can’t wait to come back.
The location is breathtaking - surrounded by jungle, lagoon, and sea, with an abundance of birds and wildlife. Being so immersed in nature felt deeply grounding and healing. The food was incredible: nourishing, comforting, and clearly prepared with so much care. Every meal felt like part of the healing process.
The Ayurvedic treatments were phenomenal. The doctors and massage therapists were attentive, kind, and genuinely invested in making each day the best possible experience. While the doctors didn’t speak much English, it never felt like a limitation - I was there to experience rather than analyse, and that felt right.
One of the most meaningful aspects of this retreat was the people I met. I formed deep connections and, through this shared space, learned more about myself in 10 days than I have in the past year.
I want to especially acknowledge Lucy and Rebecca, who led the yoga and healing sessions. They are truly incredible - deeply present, compassionate, and gifted at creating a safe, supportive space. Through both their practices and conversations, I was able to process my experience and access a level of healing I hadn’t reached before. They were a huge part of what made this retreat so special for me.
I do feel it’s important to gently mention one observation, as transparency matters. While my personal experience as a guest was very positive, I noticed moments that made me feel uncomfortable regarding how staff were treated, particularly by the retreat owner. Staff appeared fearful at times, and there was a noticeable separation between guests and staff during ceremonies. I also wasn’t clear about how tips were distributed, which left me uncertain. I share this not to detract from the healing I personally experienced, but because ethical treatment of staff is important to me and may matter to others considering a stay.
Overall, this retreat offered profound healing, connection, and reflection. It is a powerful place for those seeking deep rest, self-discovery, and immersion in nature.
The doctors, therapists and masseurs were incredible, again nothing was too much and did everything professionally with a warmth that may very well be the Sri Lankan attitude towards life, making sure you are comfortable and taken care of. I loved the Ayurvedic treatments and left feeling refreshed and energised.
The kitchen staff made the most delicious food in the Ayurvedic tradition and the fact that meals were served together with the other guests also contributed to the beautiful energy that we felt at the sanctuary.
Amrita and Rebecca guided us through beautiful yoga sessions and meditation practices which we are grateful for. 💛
The location is wonderful, please do take a morning to see the sunrise on the beach.
A quick mention of Taru, the driver who took us back to the airport, who made the 3 hrs journey feel like 10 minutes, told us so many things about Sri Lanka and once more had a wonderful energy to him.
Thank you all and hope to come back soon!
💛
My friends and I spent seven unforgettable days at Zen Wellness in Sri Lanka, and it was truly one of the most heart-warming, rejuvenating experiences of our lives. From the moment we arrived, we were embraced with genuine kindness, serenity, and a level of care that went far beyond our expectations.
The food deserves special praise—every meal was a delight. Thoughtfully prepared, nourishing, and absolutely delicious, the cuisine perfectly complemented the retreat experience. Each dish felt like it was made with love, balancing flavor and wellness in the most beautiful way.
The staff and therapists at Zen Wellness are simply extraordinary. Their warmth, professionalism, and attentiveness made us feel supported and cared for at every step. The Ayurvedic treatments and massages were deeply healing and transformative—tailored with expertise and delivered with such compassion that each session felt like a true reset for both body and mind.
A very special mention must go to Lucy, the hotel manager, who truly elevated our entire stay. Her attention to detail, genuine care, and personal touch made all the difference. Lucy has an incredible way of making guests feel not just welcome, but truly seen and valued. Thanks to her, every day flowed effortlessly, and every request was met with grace and a smile.
The highlight of our stay was the beautiful birthday surprises they arranged for me. From thoughtful gestures to touching moments that made me feel incredibly special, it was clear that the team went out of their way to create memories I will cherish forever. Celebrating my birthday in such a peaceful, loving environment, surrounded by my friends and the Zen Wellness family, was nothing short of magical.
Zen Wellness is not just a retreat—it’s truly a sanctuary. A place where healing, joy, and connection come together seamlessly. I left feeling renewed, grateful, and already dreaming of returning. Thank you to the entire Zen Wellness team for creating such a meaningful and unforgettable experience. 💚✨
The care, cleanliness, hospitality, and energy of this place are exceptional. You welcome people with open hearts and open arms, in a way that feels like family rather than a retreat. Even as someone quite reserved, I felt safe to open up almost immediately. The ceremonial gatherings, treatments, food, and the gentle, unrushed pace create a space where you can truly feel and be yourself. My favourite moments were sitting by the lagoon in the mornings, with no rush ... even though I’m not usually a nature person, that space felt perfect for me.
I was there for my birthday, and the way you celebrated it for me — the cake, the lagoon setting, the thoughtfulness — made it one of the most meaningful times of my life. As a psychotherapist who spends her life supporting others in their healing, this was something I deeply needed for myself. I genuinely feel I healed in ways I didn’t even realise I needed.
The doctors and staff are incredibly well trained, attentive, and always present , not just looking after your stay, but truly holding your emotional experience. This was my first time in Sri Lanka, and I experienced it as one of the most peaceful places I’ve ever been , because of Sen Wellness and its people.
I’ve travelled to many beautiful places, but this was different. I’ve fallen in love with you, I miss you deeply, and I can’t wait to return, knowing I’ll be welcomed in exactly the same way ❤️
With love,Saima ...
Doctors, chefs, and great staff.
The food was absolutely delicious — healthy, fresh, and full of flavor. The entire staff was warm, supportive, and always ready to help with anything I needed.
Overall, Sen Wellness Sanctuary provided the perfect balance of healing, relaxation, and nourishment. I left feeling refreshed, re-energized, and very grateful for the experience. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a peaceful and transformative retreat.
From the moment I arrived, I knew I had found a truly special place for my Ayurvedic treatment. I wholeheartedly recommend this center to anyone seeking authentic healing and rejuvenation.
The consultations with the Ayurvedic specialists (doctors) were incredibly helpful and deeply engaging. They took the time to understand my specific needs and condition, showing genuine dedication to ensuring the treatment brought the maximum possible benefits.
The treatments themselves were highly professional, carried out with extraordinary care and attention to every single detail.
The staff and service are wonderful – truly delightful and always trying to assist you with various situations at every turn. Their genuine smiles and commitment to guest comfort make the experience even more pleasant.
The food is diverse, absolutely delicious, and beautifully prepared. The menu ensures that no one goes hungry, offering nourishing and flavorful meals that are an integral part of the healing process.
Finally, the location is absolutely stunning. The resort itself is beautiful, perfectly situated right on the edge of a serene lagoon. It features a lovely pool and has easy access to the beach, where you can admire the raw power and beauty of the ocean.
I highly recommend undergoing your Ayurvedic treatment here because you will meet smiling, dedicated people who genuinely care about maximizing your well-being and health status. It is a place of profound relaxation, expert care, and positive energy.
The staff are simply amazing — always smiling, kind, and genuinely thoughtful. You can feel that they put their hearts into everything they do, every single day. The food is absolutely delicious, fresh, and nourishing, perfectly aligned with the Ayurvedic philosophy.
Each day brought new, amazing treatments that helped me relax and reconnect with myself. It was my first retreat, and I couldn’t have imagined a better place to begin this journey. Life here runs on island time and style — calm, unhurried, and full of warmth.
I felt completely comfortable and cared for from the moment I arrived. A huge thank you to everyone who made this experience so special. I’m leaving with a calm mind, a happy heart, and deep gratitude. 🌿💚
