Education Project & Sustainability Support
Sen Wellness is sponsoring the publication of a children's book which aims to raise awareness of local environmental issues and the need to protect the valuable coastal resources of Sri Lanka. This will feature the topic of mangroves, as some local villagers cut them down for firewood, not necessarily realising the vital function the mangrove trees serve within the local ecosystem. The use of plastics and recycling will also be covered. We hope that this educational resource will create behaviour change in the immediate future and for generations to come.
The 2004 tsunami caused damage to Rekawa Lagoon, resulting in reduced catchments for local fishermen in the years that followed. Environmental advisors determined that it was necessary for prawn larvae to be introduced twice per year.
Sen Wellness has been supporting this project for several years and we are pleased to report that the 50 local fishing families whose livelihood depends on the lagoon are now getting good catchments.
